Signs - Artsy Town

The tiny town of Saugatuck, Michigan, population of around 1,000,  is located on the east coast of Lake Michigan. During the summer,  the population swells to up to 3,000. Saugatuck is considered the "Art Coast of Michigan", possibly because it has 19 art galleries.

What does the name mean?

I looked up the town online and there isn't an origin for the name except that it was suggested by the postmaster at the time in the mid 1800s.

19 galeries in such a small town! Everyone there must be an artist!
